Whether you’re looking to welcome a sweet new family pet, add a charming bundle of fluff to your backyard homestead, or guide a child through a rewarding youth project, rabbits are an absolute joy to raise. They are quiet, full of distinct personality, and surprisingly easy to fall in love with! We love our small herd (or fluffle as charmingly called) of rabbits.
Like any animal companion, rabbits thrive best when we understand their unique language and needs. Here is our friendly guide to help you get started with your new long-eared friends!
1. Finding Your Perfect Match:
Every rabbit breed has its own unique flair, so finding the right fit for your family or farm is half the fun!
- Sweet Companions: If you’re looking for a cuddly lap pet or a small-space friend, breeds like the Holland Lop, Mini Rex (with fur that feels like velvet!), and tiny Netherland Dwarfs are wonderful choices.
- Beautiful Fiber Providers: For the crafters and spinners, Angora rabbits are like living clouds that grow gorgeous, soft wool you can harvest gently throughout the year.
- Homestead Helpers: If you’re focusing on self-sufficiency and high-quality garden fertilizer, gentle giants like New Zealands and Californians are the traditional, fast-growing favorites.
2. Creating a Cozy Home:
Rabbits need a safe, peaceful sanctuary where they can stretch out, play, and feel completely secure.
- Room to Hop: Your rabbit's home should be a joyful place! A great rule of thumb is a minimum of 12 square feet of living space. They should easily be able to stand all the way up on their hind legs to look around without bumping their ears. If your rabbits are raised on the ground, give me hiding spots like tunnels or overturned pots. Hiding makes them feel safe.
- Happy Feet: If you use wire-bottom enclosures for easy cleanup, always make sure to give your bunnies a solid place to rest, like a ceramic tile or a smooth mat. Sitting on wire all day can hurt their sensitive footpads.
- Beating the Summer Heat: While rabbits sport cozy winter coats and tolerate the chilly months wonderfully, they easily get overheated. Once summer temperatures climb past 85°F, your bunnies will need plenty of shade, breezy ventilation, and frozen water bottles to snuggle up against to stay cool.
3. Wholesome Nutrition for Happy Tummies:
A rabbit’s digestive system is a little engine that needs to keep moving! Feeding them correctly is the best way to show them love.
- The Power of Hay (80% of their diet): Unlimited, fresh grass hay (like Timothy or Orchard grass) should always be available. Munched all day long, it keeps their tummies happy and naturally wears down their teeth, which never stop growing!
- Nutritious Pellets & Greens: A small daily serving of high-quality pellets gives them the vitamins they need. You can also treat them to a fresh handful of crunchy greens like romaine lettuce, cilantro, or dandelion greens. Our bunnies love herbs too! Fresh basil, oregano and parsley really make them happy.
- Fresh Water: Rabbits are surprisingly thirsty critters! Keep a heavy ceramic crock or a clean drip bottle filled with fresh, cool water every single day.
4. Tender Loving Daily Care:
Getting to know your rabbits through daily routines is the most rewarding part of the journey.
A Gentle Note on Handling: Because rabbits are gentle prey animals, they can easily get startled. When lifting your bunny, never pick them up by the ears. Instead, scoop them up gently, always cradling and supporting their hindquarters close to your chest so they feel safe and secure.
- Keep an Eye Out: Because they are naturally quiet, rabbits hide when they aren't feeling well. If you notice your bunny loses interest in their food or stops hopping around, it’s their way of asking for a little extra help and care.
- Bonds and Grooming: Spending a few minutes brushing your rabbit not only keeps their coat looking beautiful, but it's also a wonderful way to bond with them. Add in a nail trim every few weeks, and your rabbit will stay happy, healthy, and hopping!
